Cemeteries in Australia

There are a number of large cemeteries in Australia, many of which contain war graveyards, shrines and notable people’s final resting places.  If you are interested in visiting a Necropolis, or “City of the Dead”, the following are some of the largest in the country.

Rookwood Cemetery, established in 1867, is located in Sydney and is one of the largest graveyards in the world with a reported one million souls resting in peace.  In this cemetery, you will find a war cemetery, shrines to the victims of the holocaust, and a “Circle of Love Shrine” dedicated to children.  Also in Sydney is Waverley Cemetery, which is the resting place of the writer Henry Lawson, poet Henry Kendall, and inventor Lawrence Hargrave.

The Melbourne General Cemetery, which opened in 1853, is located in Carlton North in Melbourne.  Headstones for Four Australian Prime Ministers can be found here, as well as the burial places for Robert O'Hara Burke and William John Wills, famous explorers.  You can also see the famous billiards player Walter Lindrum billiard table-shaped headstone.

Other notable resting places include the Fawkner Cemetery in Melbourne, the Island of the Dead in Tasmania, the Centennial Park Cemetery in Adelaide, and the Toowong Cemetery in Brisbane.
