Going Green

Ways to Start Going Green

Are you considering going green?  Being more environmentally conscious is not only good for the planet, it can also be good for your health and good for your wallet.  The following are 3 easy steps to get you started on the path to becoming greener in your everyday life.

1.         Turn off, shut down and unplug.
One of the easiest things you can do to make your home greener is to turn off devices when you are not using them.  Everyone knows it’s best to flip the light switch when you leave a room or shut down your computer.  However, did you know that many other items that remain plugged in while “off” are still using electricity?  Some appliances use almost the same amount of energy as if you had left them on and running!  Unplug those unused items to save electricity.

2.         Step away from that gas guzzler.
Another way for you to get on the path to going green is to retire that giant gas guzzling SUV and buy a hybrid or electric car.  Less gas means less emissions and a greener earth, not to mention more green in your wallet too.  If a new car isn’t possible with your current means, then why not try biking or walking to nearby places you’d normally climb into the car for?  An added perk of doing this just a few times a week is that it can greatly improve your health.

3.         Buy organic, locally, and consciously.
Start by buying more organic items.  Organic produce is usually not sprayed with chemicals and does not contain unhealthy additives.  Less pesticide is better for the earth and your body.  Buying locally is also good for going green as it means the items have travelled shorter distances thus using fewer resources to get to you.  You can also try to buy items with less packaging, or with more environmentally conscious or biodegradable packaging.  Try going meatless for just one meal or more per week, as meat production not only costs you, but also costs the planet in green resources.

These are just a few steps that can help with your lifestyle change and get you on the path to going green.  There are many things you can do right now to help preserve the future for our children and our children’s children.  Even locally, there are many areas of green living you can look into.  Why not look around and find some local green activities?
